A total of six Government Schools in Kisoro district have converged at Kisoro Technical Institute in Nyakabande Sub County to participate in Scouts competition that is slated to end tomorrow.
Close to 150 scouts that include Primary and Secondary Students are engaged in activities under the theme, Talent building and Skills Development.
Sunday Julius, Kisoro District Scout Commissioner said they are hoping to get the best team to represent the district in the National Competitions at Kazi.
Sunday said the Covid- 19 pandemic and the lockdown had paralyzed schools from meeting for scouting activities however that is slowly changing.
Kisoro Demonstration School had a total of 16 deaf-blind pupils emerged victors at a scouting competition for disabled pupils in Uganda held at Kaazi back in 2022.
Natukunda Grace, Kisoro District Executive commissioner said talent building is a vital component for the learners because many schools in the district do not engage in outdoor activities which is a shortfall to the learners.
Natukunda says, more schools should have honored the invitation to participate in the Scouts competitions.
Kenani Omita, Civil Military Operations Officer with the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces said scouting is a good opportunity to learn about self-defense, discipline and patriotism.
Omita says such skills should not be only left to young learners but the entire community who can benefit from such activities.
Ingabire Kellen, a pupil at Rukonge primary school said she is happy to attend scouting camp where she has learnt how she can make table without any nail which is going to help her improve her skills.
Ndayisenga Rodgers a student from Mutolere secondary school thanked the schools which came to participate where they were not happy to find when they are very few and they were like competing alone yet in the camp they learn many things where they learn to work hand build different tents without any nail using their skills they acquire from camp.
Maniriho Steven a student from Kisoro technical institute called up other institutions schools where they acquire a lot of hand skills using available resources that everyone can admire.
The two writers are intern students at Metropolitan International University Kisoro Campus and Kampala International University Kansanga respectively.
