A total of 16 deaf-blind pupils from Kisoro Demonstration Primary School in Kisoro Municipality have emerged victors at a scouting competitions for disabled pupils in Uganda held at Kaazi.
The competition that lasted one week was concluded yesterday.
Kisoro Demo sent pupils with physical and hearing impairments and to their joy, the pupils excelled and were given two trophies in the Presence of President Yoweri Museveni, who attended as the guest of Honor.
The Kisoro District Scouts Commissioner Musinguzi Wenceslas said it so encouraging to see that pupils with disability are performing well and bringing such pride and joy to the district.
He noted that an invitation to participate in East African Competition is a great achievement however scouting in Kisoro is still under budgeted and given less priority.
He called on the community to support scouting activities because they have various advantages to both the physically impaired and those whose bodies function normally.
The Kisoro Municipality Principal education officer Nkurikiyimana Gerald congratulated participant pupils, their trainers and the entire Kisoro Demo School for putting Kisoro Municipality on the national map and urged them to continue with the same spirit.
He pledged continued support from the municipal authority saying that funds to support the scouts compete in the East African competitions are not available however through fundraising, the monies to support the pupils will be made available.
He also applauded Support Education for Disadvantaged Children in Uganda (SEDCU), an organisation that provided financial and moral support to the team at the national level competitions.
Nkurikiyimana called on parents, guardians and care takers not to stifle talents among children with disabilities because opportunities are many for them to succeed in life.
One participant with visual impairment, Niyonshima Talent expressed joy for the milestone saying that he did not believe in himself before.
He encouraged his fellow blind and deaf and those who cannot speak not to lose hope in their lives because disability is not inability.
This is the second time Kisoro demonstration primary school is representing Uganda in the East African scouts competitions for pupils with disabilities.
The first time was before the Covid-19 pandemic. Details of the venue and date for this year’s competition has not yet been confirmed.
