The State-Minister for Works Francis Musa Ecweru has said Government is committed to upgrading the Nyakabande- Mutolere road.
The road, which largely remains impassable by motor vehicle connects St. Francis Hospital, Mutolere to the surrounding communities.
During an assessment visit to Kisoro district over the weekend, Minister Ecweru quelled claims from the locals, that Government officials had mismanaged funds meant for the road.
Ecweru explained that the monies, they were being referred to, were utilized to upgrade Kamonyi- Mutolere road that is currently serving road users in Kisoro Municipality as well as those heading towards Matinza and Rubuguri.
The comments come days after residents of Nyakabande Sub County staged a protest against the Government where they said poor roads in the area do not reflect Government’s commitment to the people of Kisoro.
Minister Ecweru, who has been on a tour of Kigezi region says, the state of roads in the region is quite alarming, especially with the onset of heavy rains.
Hon. Ecweru, in the company of State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs (Kisoro Woman MP) Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, also visited Kanyamateke Bridge in Busanza Sub County, Kisoro district.
Kanyamateke Bridge is one of the bridges, the President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni pledged to revamp, during the Presidential campaigns.
It is also a major installation that connects communities especially business operators taking goods, as far as Mupaka Border with Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hon. Sarah Mateke said Government had sent Minister Ecweru to assess the level of damage to the bridge and to come up with a report to the President, to ensure the bridge is worked upon very soon.
Local leaders including the Kisoro district LCV Chairperson Abel Bizimana and the Kisoro Municipal Mayor Richard Ndyana called on Kisoro communities to remain patient, as Government finds solutions to the poor roads in the district.
