The Bishop of Muhabura Diocese Rt. Rev Cranmer Mugisha has expressed growing concern among the youth, which has developed stone cold hearts towards what is right and are now following, what is often termed as, the way of the world.
The comments come at the heels of an event in Kisoro Municipality that shocked the entire district and left many other parts of the country generally excited.
A 29 year old resident of Nyakinama Sub County and father of three was filmed by smart phone having roadside sex with a Rwandan national, with little or no care for the people around them.
The duo has since been arrested and charged with public nuisance.
The video, which went viral instantly was trending on twitter with more than 3500 views putting Kisoro on the map, however according to Bishop Cranmer, this is a warning sign.
Bishop Cranmer explains that because the world has become interlinked thanks to technology and social media platforms, many youth from Kisoro who were previously naïve to these things have become exposed to them.
“The world is going is crazy because good behavior is quickly dying out. Our children are plugged in to media related products which is exposing them to pornography and other programs that are questionable”, Bishop Cranmer explained
He further said it is so disheartening that a young woman can reduce her dignity to 5000 shillings.
“We must admit that poverty among our people is real however for this young lady to cheapen herself is reason for concern. I admit when I fight saw the video, I thought they were acting but now, I know it was real, Bishop Cranmer notes.
Let the little children come
Bishop Cranmer noted that it is true some of these issues can develop in Christian communities and so children develop into young adults without the proper grooming.
He notes that it is not too late to help the youth find purpose and meaning in this difficult world.
“I have advised the church leadership to design tailor made programs that can keep the youth engaged but also allow them to feel appreciated, it is the only way we shall save this district and country from falling into debauchery”, Cranmer emphasized
Other Leaders Speak out
Former Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Rose Kabagenyi condemned the act and said she is aware Kisoro Youth are struggling with lack of access to financial development however desperation is not the solution.
Kisoro Municipal Mayor Richard Ndyana said security reports indicate the man had smoked Marijuana and the woman, a renowned prostitute in Rwanda and now Uganda brought shame to Kisoro district.
He noted that the Municipal authority is preparing to sensitize sex workers on how they should operate and if they fail to adhere, they will be deported.
