The State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs and Kisoro district Woman Member of Parliament has led a team of Ministry of Works and Transport engineers to inspect Kanyamateke Bridge in Kisoro district which is in a sorry state.
Kanyamateke Bridge, found in Gikoro village, Buhozi parish, Busanza Sub County in Kisoro district that was constructed in 2011 is an interconnecting Bridge between Busanza and Kirundo Sub Counties.
The Bridge in recent years has become a death trap claiming the lives of several pedestrians who fall into the flowing river Kaku.
Heavy trucks carrying merchandise needed by communities for business have since abandoned using the Bridge.
Eng. Patrick Osele from the Department of Roads and Bridges at the Ministry of Works and Transport says the site visit will enable them prepare an inspection report that will include design and estimates that will be submitted to the Ministry for decision making.
Eng. Osele further commended the residents and the district leadership for making a makeshift Bridge to ensure that transport is not permanently halted.
The Kisoro district woman Member of Parliament Hon Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke said the deadly bridge has affected the people of Busanza and Kirundo Sub Counties for a very long time.
Hon. Sarah said the people need to wait on Government to fix the Bridge adding that if she had the money, she would fix it out of her own pocket.
Construction of Kanyamateke Bridge is one of the pledges included in President Yoweri Museveni’s manifesto for Kisoro district.
