Over 71,000 households in Kisoro District received Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) under a campaign dubbed “Under the Net”.
207,720 LLINs were distributed to the District by the Ministry of Health enabling the district to achieve an 80% coverage.

Kisoro District Malaria Focal Point Person Muntu Geoffrey says some households were unable to receive the (LLINs) due to the inaccurate data provided by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) which superseded the indicative figures provided by the health department in Kisoro.
Muntu however noted that this being the fourth Universal coverage campaign, several households in Kisoro still had intact mosquito nets.
“Pregnant mothers who visit health facilities across the district are given mosquito nets as a routine practice during child health days, therefore communities should not lament about missing out on this particular round of Mosquito net distribution”, Muntu explained
According to the Ministry of Health, total of 28.5 million Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) were given out throughout Uganda.
The main objective of the campaign was to increase access and ownership of nets in communities across the country.
The campaign further sought to create a culture of net use
Malaria still remains a major public health problem in Uganda affecting nearly 95% of the population.
Uganda ranks 3rd in Global Malaria burden with over 12 million cases reported annually.
Muntu says the number of Malaria cases registered, especially during the rainy season range from between 200 to 400 weekly across health facilities.
He noted that communities that live near wetlands are most affected including the sub counties of Nyundo, Kirundo, Nyakabande, Busanza, Bukimbiri and Murora.
Muntu says no deaths have been registered in Kisoro which is a good sign however complacency and negligence should be avoided.
He noted that many households still have their new nets kept in their package and are hoping to unveil them during the Christmas holiday while others have plans to use them to create Chicken coups.
“Anyone caught misusing the mosquito nets will be arrested and taken to courts of law. The nets are meant to protect human life and not be used to rear animals, Muntu stressed.
