The distribution of Insecticide treated Mosquito Nets in Kisoro district is off to a good start as communities rally at various distribution points to pick their mosquito nets.
The exercise that officially kicked off today will see 207, 720 Mosquito Nets distributed to people in Kisoro district at different distribution points including playgrounds and Sub County headquarters.
The objective of handing out the free mosquito nets is to prevent malaria transmission.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends sleeping under a mosquito net on a daily basis for the 3.2 billion people worldwide who remain at risk of malaria.
The Ministry of Health says Uganda is currently experiencing a new burden of malaria with more than 300,000 cases reported every week since January 2022,
The malaria death rate in Uganda is estimated to be between 70,000 and 100,000 deaths per year; a toll that exceeds that of HIV/AIDS.
Malaria hotspots in Kisoro include Nyundo, Nyarusiza, Muramba, Chahafi and Kisoro Municipality.
Hundreds of people already received treated mosquito nets from different parts of the district according to Muntu Geoffrey district focal persons for VHTs.
In Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality, residents said they are grateful to Government for providing the mosquito nets.
Niyonzima Michael Bazamanza, LC III Chairperson of Northern Division advised residents to make good use of the nets. He advised Government to make proper planning of mosquito nets per household because some households are not going to get them.
VHT Coordinator of Kamonyi Ward Florence Kitentera said the exercise is going on well with each household getting at least one mosquito net depending on the number of people in a home.
“Two people get one, four people get two mosquito nets six people get six mosquito nets and so on and so forth. That is how we are distributing them and hopefully the exercise will be completed by today”, Kitentera explained.
Vincent Munezera, LCIII Councilor Rwaramba Parish in Nyakinama sub-county said Malaria cases are on the rise in Rwaramba parish and they face a problem of inadequate health services like medicine.
