Police in Kanungu District have arrested a 26-year-old woman in connection with the alleged murder of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy in a disturbing case of child abuse.

The suspect, identified as Shivan Orishaba, is accused of killing Salvan Akankwasa, the son of Karimu Nyuga, a resident of Kameme Cell, Kibimbiri Parish in Kihihi Sub-county.

According to police reports, the incident stems from a complex family situation.

The child’s father had previously been living in Rukungiri District with his first wife, who is also the mother of the deceased.

Following their separation, he relocated to Kameme village in search of casual work, where he reportedly began cohabiting with the suspect for about six months.

Two weeks prior to the incident, the father brought the child to live with him and the suspect, effectively placing the toddler under the care of his stepmother.

Police allege that on May 1, 2026, the suspect severely assaulted the child under unclear circumstances.

The toddler was rushed to Kihihi Health Centre IV for medical attention but was pronounced dead the following day, May 2, at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Authorities say investigations were immediately launched, including a medical examination of the body.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and is currently in police custody as inquiries continue.

Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson ASP Maate Elly confirmed the arrest and assured the public that thorough investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The tragic incident has sparked concern among residents, with police urging communities to remain vigilant and report cases of domestic violence and child abuse to prevent similar occurrences.
