Mrs Ndagijimana, who has lived in Kisoro since 1976, has supported more than 1,000 needy children, helping improve their access to education and other essential services.

The Order of Merit, also known as the Federal Cross of Merit, was established in 1951 by Germany’s then President, Theodor Heuss. It recognises exceptional contributions to society through humanitarian work, charity and other forms of public service. The award is conferred by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany and is open to both German and foreign nationals.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kisoro District LC5 Chairperson Richard Ndyana praised Mrs Ndagijimana for her contribution to the community, particularly during her time as a teacher at St Paul’s Mutolere Secondary School.

Ndyana said she had supported students, fellow teachers and the school, leaving a lasting impact on the institution and the wider community.

Bekunda Brian, chairperson of Together for Uganda, described Mrs Ndagijimana as the organisation’s founder, noting that its work had benefited many people. He said the recognition was well deserved given her commitment to helping vulnerable members of the community.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Manirampa, a staff member at St Francis Hospital Mutolere, commended Mrs Ndagijimana for her outstanding service, saying many residents of Kisoro had benefited from her work.

In her remarks, Mrs Ndagijimana said the award celebrated a legacy built over five decades through education, compassion and humanitarian assistance.

Her recognition highlights the contribution of individuals whose long-term commitment to community service has helped improve the lives of vulnerable people in Kisoro District.
