The incident occurred in the early hours of May 3, 2026, at around 5:00 a.m. in Nyabiyonga Village, Kibumba Parish, Murora Sub-county.

It is alleged that the two minors had recently gone to visit their grandparents during the school holidays and were staying with them at the time of the incident. During the night, a landslide swept through the area and engulfed part of the house, leading to the suffocation of the two girls.

The two survivors, identified as Mulema Benon, 70, and Mbaboneye Avelina, 60, sustained minor injuries and managed to escape.

They were later rushed to Chahafi Health Centre for medical attention.

Police, led by officers from the Kigezi region, visited and documented the scene. With the help of local residents, the bodies of the deceased were retrieved from the debris. Postmortem examinations have since been conducted.

Authorities have launched investigations into the incident as inquiries continue.
ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the development and urged residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
