The radio staff proudly carried home several awards including News Reporter of the Year (Alex Gahima), MC of the Year (Sunny Star MC Boaz Birungi December), Sports Presenter of the Year (Brazilian Ainamani Joram) and Legendary Artist of the year (John ‘Mbonigaba’ King).
Founding Manager and prominent businessman Tom Mugenga was also given a prestigious award for transforming the media landscape in Kisoro.
Voice of Muhabura was started in 2008 as the first radio in Kisoro district.
The radio has been instrumental in disseminating vital information critical for nation building, cultural preservation, spiritual and family growth as well as talent development among the youth.
Alex Nambajimana, the district LCV vice chairperson commended M19 Television for taking the initiative of recognizing local artistes and the media personalities in the district.
According to Nambajimana, the media space has grown with more people getting platforms to educate, inform and entertain wider audiences using the internet.
He pledged to support talent development of creative arts especially the musicians and dancers who live in the shadow of their peers in sports and science.
Seasoned artist and performer Peter Tunes of Shamba Boyz said the plight of musical artists in Kisoro cannot be ignored any longer.
He noted that a talented youth needs at least 500,000 Ugandan shillings just to be allowed into any recording studio therefore any musician with an audio needs to be celebrated.
Tunes called for discipline among the youth in the music industry by avoiding situations that tarnish their image by being untrustworthy, overly dependent on drugs and alcohol.
He urged them to start side businesses in agriculture that can earn them some money during off peak seasons, instead of begging from the public.
M19 CEO Kate Atuzarirwe said the media awards were aimed at promoting and empowering local talents in Kisoro.
She pointed out that M19 is in the process of setting up a state-of-the-art recording studio that will give young talents the opportunity to create music that is relevant and marketable to the rest of the world.
