The Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafiq Sekandi is a man and a leader whose ability to deliver on behalf of Government has enabled him become a household name in Kisoro district.
Over the weekend, while in Muramba Sub County in the Company of Muramba Sub County LCV councilor Martin Hakizimana, Hajji Shafiq Sekandi visited Ishimwe Joselin, a gunshot victim from the March 2022 clashes between Congolese Government Forces and rebels.
Ishimwe, 20 years is a mother of two. She is paralyzed in her left leg due to a stray bullet that got her while in her garden.
She recalls hearing heavy gunfire from across the border in DR. Congo and attempting to flee, a feat that has now left her permanently disabled and disadvantaged for the rest of her days.
Sekandi, with the support from UBUNTU Bafumbira Association and UNHCR, the Salvation Army Uganda managed to get her 50 Kgs of Posho, 20 Kgs of beans 18 Iron sheets, blankets, hoes and a tarpaulin.
According to Sekandi, more assistance has been lobbied for Ishimwe through Care and Assistance for Forced Migrants (CAFOMI) in form of seedlings to plant for food among others.
A day before that, Friday, Sekandi visited more than 700 mudslide and flood victims in Murora Sub County and Chahafi town council where he supervised the distribution of food relief of at least 10Kgs of Posho and 4Kgs of beans per individual.
The mobilization for such relief items was possible through the efforts of the Kisoro RDC Hajji Shafiq Sekandi.
The day leading up to the food distribution saw Hajji Shafiq spend several hours in his office planning and coordinating the activity with implementing partners.
Sekandi is known to work seven days of the week, having a cordial relationship with the Media, keeping nothing vital from the community and always advocating for dialogue before action is taken.
He also ensured to follow up on Government projects personally having commissioned several water harvesting tanks across the district in a space of weeks.
The long lines of people waiting in the corridor to his office daily, some seeking advice, clearance for a project or justice for some wrong done is testament towards his working ways.
Sekandi, with support from security have managed to address issues ranging from fleeing Congolese into the Country via Bunagana to local hoodlums who terrorize innocent people.
An incident at Kisoro Technical Institute where Students planned to strike attracted the undivided attention of the Kisoro RDC Who promised significant change was going to be effected on the institute.
Anyone who have dealt with Hajji Shafiq Sekandi, directly or indirectly can confidently say, his promises can be taken to the bank.
His workings remind us of a time in this country when honesty, integrity and hard work meant something.
Sekandi and his commitment to serving Ugandans allows for the skeptic and the unbeliever to think that it is possible that, “doing as I do and not as I say”, can be a reality.
Hope is not lost for Uganda with determined leaders like Hajji Shafiq Sekandi who get work done without considering the tribe, religion or financial status of the people they serve.
The African continent is filled with such great and capable leaders, just recently Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema captivated a room full of world leaders with truth and power.
Not the kind of power that raises armies to war but the kind of power that inspires, synergizes and brings together all people for a common good.
Those are the kind of leaders we need; wouldn’t you agree?
