The leadership of Bizenga Primary School and Nyundo Sub County, Kisoro District, have penned a complaint letter to the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi regarding unfulfilled pledges made during the Bukimbiri by-elections in August 2022.
The decision to write a reminder came after Hon Sarah Nyirabashitsi visited Nyundo Sub County on Saturday 4th this month where residents raised the concern to her but she directed them to put it in writing.
It was noted that during the by-election campaigns, NRM supporters, including Ministers, RDCs, and various MPs, organized a meeting at Bizenga Primary School to strategize on securing victory for the NRM flag bearer Eddie Kwizera Wa Gahungu.
In the letter dated 5th May 2024 and stamped by the Nyundo Sub County LC3 Chairperson, Fred Mutambuzi Kanyaruju, and the school head teacher Byekwaso Peter, they remind the minister of his pledge to provide doors and windows for the unfinished classrooms.
The letter indicates that the materials are worth Ugx 7 million for seven doors and 21 windows.
Mutambuzi highlighted the dire situation at the school, adding that learners study from a poor environment characterized in uncompleted classrooms
“Bizenga is the worst in the whole Sub County. All these structures were raised by the parents. I remember Minister Baryomunsi asked me to count all the doors and windows needed during the campaign meeting. He later said he would leave 2 million for renovating classrooms, but we haven’t seen anything,” said Mutambuzi.
The Chairperson of PTA at Bizenga Primary School, Alex Kyikabasasa, revealed that parents want the Minister and his colleagues to honour their pledges.
“This school remains in such a bad situation, despite such pledges. Dr Baryomunsi came during the by-election and made that pledge of shuttering the classrooms. We hope Minister Sarah Mateke to add something as well,” said Mr Kyikabasasa.
When contacted, Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi said he would channel his support through the area MP Hon Eddie Kwizera, but he didn’t specify the time his pledge will be delivered.
“I am in touch with Hon Kwizera. I will channel it through him because we are in touch.”
Baryomunsi noted that he personally made the pledge without a request from anyone.
“I just went there. I even promised to visit them and I will go there. They had not even asked me, its me who just…”
During the 2020 Bukimbiri County by-election, dozens of government officials including Ministers, RDCs, MPs and the Prime Minister Robinah Nabanja combed areas to mobilise support for the NRM flagbearer, Eddy Kwizera wa Gahungu who became the victor.
However, most items on the list of the pledges made during vote-hunting remain unticked.
