The Acting Commissioner Refugee Management in the (Office of the Prime Minister) Douglas Asiimwe has said fighting in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has not had any direct impact on refugee management despite intense fighting in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Asiimwe said the Government is closely monitoring the events unfolding in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo where thousands of people are fleeing violence as fighting intensifies between the Congolese army and the M23 armed group.
According to Asiimwe, intelligence reports indicate that most Congolese are fleeing deeper inland to designated places where the people can get some shelter from gunfire and rockets.
He advised communities in Kisoro and other border districts with the Democratic Republic of Congo to remain vigilant.
He said the situation can change at any time and that is why the Office of the Prime Minister is adjusting its refugee contingency plan to anticipate any eventuality of Congolese crossing into Uganda overnight.
Nyakabande Transit Camp Relocates 200
Nyakabande Transit Camp Deputy Commandant working with Office of the Prime Minister Emmy Mukiindo said the camp receives an average of 30 to 31 Congolese every day, with many fleeing from North Kivu Province because of fear of being kidnapped or forcefully being recruited to fight in the war.
The number of Congolese at the transit camp is 600 after a relocation of 200 people on Thursday last week to Nakivale Settlement Camp
