A 25-year-old man by the names of Mwesigye Bonaventure, commonly known as Ben has today been sentenced to serve 15 years in prison on two accounts of Rape and aggravated robbery.
Ben, who used to operate a saloon at Chapa Trading Center in Nyakabande sub-County, Kisoro district was found guilty of raping an 80-year-old woman in her house.
The accused also stolen a half sack of beans worth 150,000 Ugandan shillings after raping the woman.
The old woman, Nyirabumba Florence suffered at the hands of a man who could have been her great grandson.
Court heard that on the 9th of April 2021 at 9pm, the accused forcefully entered the home of Nyirabumba Florence by removing the stones under her door and crawled into her house.
He found the old woman eating supper using a torch for light and demanded for money which she said she did not have.
The accused threatened to have rough sexual intercourse with the old woman until morning if she does not comply with his demands.
Mwesigye strangled the old woman while pushing her down to the floor where he forcefully raped her after which he used the blunt side of a panga to slap her in her back demanding for the beans.
The old woman was discovered the next morning by her neighbor who found her legs spread apart and she was severely bruised in and around her genital area.
Defense lawyers of Mwesigye asked court to show leniency because Mwesigye is a single father of a seven-year-old child who is now living with Mwesigye’s elderly father who is over 70 years.
Hon. Justice Samuel Emokor said the accused has committed an evil crime involving sexual intercourse with an elderly woman who is 55 years old than the suspect.
He said 15 years in prison will be served con-currently for rape and aggravated robbery to give the convict an opportunity to reform and return to cater for his child and elderly father.
