The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) based at Katerere in Bukimbiri Sub County, Kisoro District has agreed to plant 1000 Grevillea Robusta, commonly known as Silver Oak in a bid to promote conservation.
Katerere Army Barracks falls under the operational command of 35th Infantry Battalion located in Nyakabande Sub County.
35th Battalion Second in Command, Major Bosco Aguzo and UPDF Political Commissar for Kisoro district, Lieutenant Omita Kenan today received the consignment on behalf of the UPDF from Nyanamo Community Conservation and Development Organization (NCCDO) Head, Lameech Duhimbaze.
During the handover, Lt. Omita expressed great appreciation towards NCCDO and Million Trees International for considering the army as beneficiaries.
The army camp plays a vital role in protecting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP).
BINP covers 32,000 hectares of land and is known for its exceptional biodiversity. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994.
Lt. Omita explained that additional tree cover is vital in concealing military presence from possible attackers.
He said the army is prepared to put its weight behind encouraging communities’ plant more trees to prevent soil erosion, deforestation and landslides that have had devastating effects across the district.

Lameech Duhimbaze of NCCDO said the organization is prepared to support the army and other communities in restoring forests that have been encroached on for commercial purposes.
Duhimbaze says more climate action needs to be taken because global warming effects are being seen across Africa, in Libya and Morocco.
He noted that the recent mudslides in Kanaba and Murora Sub Counties should be a wakeup call to communities to embrace tree planting and conservation.
