A distraught Kisoro district LCV Chairperson, Abel Bizimana has said Security operatives planned to assassinate him by shooting at him while he was convening a stakeholders meeting at Sunset bar in Kisoro Municipality.
The news that has rocked the district has since been down played by the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and the District Police Commander (DPC), who claim, Chairman’s comments are inaccurate and politically motivated.
While speaking to Vomuhabura, Kisoro district LCV Abel Bizimana narrated that, while he was meeting with teachers of Private Secondary Schools at Sunset Hotel, a few hours after curfew, Police approached the bar, specifically looking for the chairman.
According to Bizimana, the Police and the Army officers, who were shouting his name were denied access because the door was closed decided to fire bullets which, Bizimana claims were aimed at him.
“It is true, I was called by some teachers of Private Secondary Schools and some members of UNATU to have a brief meeting about their plight during the lockdown. No sooner had the meeting began, than Police and Army officers stormed the hotel and they were looking for me, Bizimana explained
He further explains that during the standoff between Security and the revelers, the Police and Army officers kept singling out his name, threatening to take him, dead or alive.
“When I responded that Abel Bizimana is not a bar maid or a waiter in the hotel therefore they should live him alone, the officers cocked their firearms and fire, Colleagues include myself, had to take evasive measures to avoid being shot, Bizimana narrated
Bizimana further noted that some other leaders hold illegal meetings during Curfew hours however no one bothers them.
“I am aware that Bufumbira North MP Kamara John and Kisoro RDC Peter Mugisha hold illegal meetings but no one comes against them, why are they targeting me, why do they want to kill me? It seems they wanted to end my life under the cover of me, flouting of late night curfew “, Bizimana said
Security Speaks out
Kisoro deputy RDC Dan Ndikumwami refuted the allegations saying his office has not received any reports. He noted that the Presidential directives and Ministry of Health guidelines are clear, “No bars across the country have been allowed to operate”, Ndikumwami explained.
Ndikumwami further distanced himself from the incident further explaining that he was not part of the night operation.
“You see, sometimes during a night operation, when people become rowdy and aggressive, Police might fire bullets to control the situation therefore, assassination claims against Chairman are baseless, however we are now conducting investigations into the matter”, Ndikumwami said
Kisoro district Acting DPC Steven Ogwang said Assassination claims need to be disregarded.
“There was no any form of Assassination at Sunset Bar. They was a group of people drinking. They were very many and they were making a lot of noise which was a security threat, when our Police team responded, the people in the bar reiterated by abusing our officers who remained calm. In fact, the shooting did not happen at Sunset bar, Ogwang explained
