Youth in Kisoro are demanding for an opportunity to be included in positions of active leadership at Sub county level against the fight of Corona virus disease in the district.
The issue was raised during this week’s district Covid-19 taskforce meeting chaired by Kisoro deputy Resident District commissioner Dan Ndikumwami.
Kisoro district Youth Chairperson John Bosco Tuyizere said only two sub counties in the entire district had found
it wise to include youth on their Covid- 19 task forces while the rest decide to ignore that key component.
“It is important to remember that the biggest percentage of our population is comprised of teenagers and the youth. Why don’t you consider include youth on the leadership structure against the fight of Covid- 19”, Tuyizere asked.
The development comes following approval of a covid-19 supplementary budget of 305,200,000 Ugandan shillings meant to boast the fight against COVID 19.
Tuyizere said noted the limited adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) among the youths in the district is because they are not involved in the covid-19 fight.
The Kisoro district Deputy Chief Administrative officer, Byiringiro Elizabeth Rita and the district probation officer Kampire Moira both agreed and reinforced Tuyizere submission.
They explained that youth in Kisoro are among the groups that have refused to follow SOPs and this is very dangerous incase Covid -19 continues to remain among members of the public.
The Kisoro District Deputy Resident District Commissioner Dan Ndikumwami said it is unfortunate that youths leaders have been denied a chance to contribute to the fight against covid-19.
He asked sub county chiefs to review their committees to ensure that the youths get positions.
Meanwhile, Ndikumwami says that covid-19 in Kisoro has resurged with 7 cases being reported in Nyabaremura Village in Rubuguri town council.
He noted that other areas of Nyakabande, Bukimbiri and Northern Division in Kisoro Municipality are still on high alert and communities need to take precautions by following the SOPs issued by Ministry of Health.
