Parents should diversify their income through business and commercial agriculture, Kisoro Woman MP, Akifeza Grace has said.
Hon. Akifeza made the call to parents as she donated mattresses to best performers from UPE schools in last year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
During the function held at Mubano Hotel inKisoro Municipality, a total of 136 learners received mattresses ahead of joining Secondary school.
“Let’s all be responsible to create a bright future for our children. As parents, let’s ensure that we earn more from agriculture and enter the business economy. We can as well start small business projects to improve on our earnings as families,” said Akifeza.
She said that due to shortage of land in Kisoro, people ought to diversify their income to meet their financial needs.
The function was attended by officials that include Kisoro Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajj Badru Sebyala, LC5 Chairperson Abel Bizimana, District Education Officer (DEO) Emmanuel Mwumvaneza, Deputy RDC Robert Tukamuhebwa, and others.
Munvaneza Emmanuel, the Kisoro DEO regretted that some parents are yet to send their children to school, one week into the new term.
He also urged parents to provide their children with scholastic materials and food as they go to school, as one of the ways to address school dropout.
“Parents are not giving their children food as they go to school. However, they have money for alcohol every day. How do you expect your child to perform on an empty stomach? Let’s feed our children,” said Mwumvaneza.
Kisoro RDC Hajj Badru Sebyala charged learners to maintain smartness, urging schools to give holistic education to their learners.
“You must dress smartly. These boda boda shoes are not meant to be in school. And please teachers and parents, train children to pass exams but also on other things like dressing, how to appear in public and for interviews, and other skills,” Sebyala said.
Abel Bizimana, in his remarks commended Hon Akifeza for supplementing parents’ efforts to educate their children.
Bizimana however challenged other legislators from Kisoro to borrow a leaf from Akifeza, instead of self-aggrandizement.
The beneficiaries and parents expressed gratitude to Hon Akifeza, saying her donation would reduce on their expenses.
Donation of mattresses to P7 leavers is one of pledges made by Hon Akifeza during last year’s heated campaigns.
