“We are going to use this time to celebrate and recognize their contributions to national development, and also look at the various challenges to come up with lasting solutions to the problems,” she added.

Addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre (UMC) in Kampala, the minister stressed the youth can play a big role in the transformation and development of the country if they are supported.

Hon.Mateke stressed that due to the current pandemic situation in the country, most of the activities will be virtual on various media platforms, with a few physical engagements in line with the set Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as set by the Ministry of Health.

She said the main activity will be celebrated at State House Entebbe with a few guests because of the COVID-19 directives.

The chairperson of the National Youth Council, Jacob Eyeru said the activities which will climax with the main National Youth Celebration on August 12, 2021, focus on lifting the voices of the youth.

This year’s youth week of action will be celebrated under the theme: “Youth innovations for Transformation of Food System and Sustainable Human Health”.

Ugandan youth make up majority of the nation’s population

Annually, Uganda joins the United Nations and the entire world to commemorate IYD.

The day was designated in 1999 after the General Assembly resolution 54/120 endorsed by the recommendation made during the Conference of Ministers of Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that August be declared IYD.
