Police in Kisoro District are investigating a suspected murder by assault and an alleged secret burial involving a Congolese national identified only as Uwimana, aged about 30 years.

According to police, the deceased was allegedly assaulted by a group of suspects, including Nsabimana John Bosco and Hakuzimana Mpunuseni, who has already been arrested, following a misunderstanding at a drinking place on May 6, 2026, at around 9:00 p.m.

It is alleged that the deceased had threatened the suspects before he was severely beaten and later handed over to police officers at Nyabwishenya Police Station. He was reportedly charged with threatening violence and detained.

Police say that on May 7, 2026, at around 8:00 a.m., Uwimana was found dead while in custody.

Investigations further indicate that instead of informing higher authorities for proper management of the case, some police officers allegedly connived with the suspects and secretly buried the deceased during the night on land belonging to Hon. Kamara.

Relatives of the deceased, who later learned about his arrest, reportedly went to Nyabwishenya seeking information about his whereabouts but were allegedly told that he had been released.

The situation escalated on May 8, 2026, when a group of Congolese nationals reportedly crossed into Uganda and attacked the suspects while demanding answers regarding the disappearance of their colleague.

Police at Nyabwishenya were informed and responded to calm the situation. However, the incident was allegedly never reported to the District Police Commander (DPC).

According to police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, intelligence information later emerged indicating that some Congolese nationals were planning to attack Nyabwishenya Police Station over the matter. The information was reportedly obtained by Biso Busanza Kyaise Sowed, who alerted the DPC, prompting immediate deployment to the area for fact-finding.

As a result, three police officers attached to Nyabwishenya Police Station were arrested to assist in investigations. They were identified as Cpl Musabimana Wickliffe, PC Apeti Kizito, and PC Yebuze Moris.

A team from CPS Kisoro has since visited the scene, and the suspected burial site of the deceased has been identified pending exhumation and a postmortem examination.
