Three officials from Muramba Sub County have been arrested over alleged extorting people seeking to benefit from the Parish Development Model (PDM) project.
Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Robert Tukamuhebwa, ordered the arrests following complaints from beneficiaries who accused the trio of incompetence and extortion.
The accused include the Gisozi Parish Chief in Muramba Sub County, Kakuze Pauline and Ndazigaruye Emmanuel, the Chairperson of Sooko PDM Sacco, who are accused of extorting between 100,000 – 150,000 Shillings from beneficiaries.
John Bosco Nteziyaremye, the Sooko Parish Chief was also arrested for supposedly taking bribes before adding beneficiaries to the list.
The three were ordered to record statements at Muramba Sub County police post as investigations take shape.
Muramba Sub County Health Inspector, Adronah Amwebonaire is to make a separate statement as she is accused of failure to perform her duties.
The office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) is conducting an assessment and review of PDM impact in Kisoro, with an aim of fighting corruption within the project.
According to Vallence Hagumimana, the Kisoro Assistant RDC, the exercise will cover all Sub Counties and Town councils. The team kicked off with Muramba SC and Bunagana Town Council this Thursday.
Before the arrest, the team distributed papers and asked members of the community to secretly write names of officials who forced them to offer bribes before they could benefit from the PDM project.
Today’s tour is led by the Kisoro RDC Hajja Badru Sebyala, flanked by his Deputy, Robert Tukamuhebwa and Assistant Hagumimana Vallence, DISO Sam Mwesigwa, Kisoro OWC Coordinator Col Deo Kaita and others.
Recently, about 3 other officials were arrested over alleged extortion, but Voice of Muhabura understands that they were later released on bond.
Authorities remain tightlipped on details of these officials, the charges they faced and how they were released.
Similar arrests have been registered in other districts like Rubanda, Kabale, Mitooma and others.
