The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), under the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, has commissioned seven Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) projects across Kisoro District as part of activities to mark this year’s Tarehe Sita celebrations.
The projects include two classroom blocks at Bizenga Primary School in Bukimbiri County and two classroom blocks at Chibumba Primary School in Bufumbira East. The UPDF also commissioned a two-unit staff housing block at Nyarusiza Health Centre III in Bufumbira South.
Other commissioned facilities include a five-stance toilet at Busanza Health Centre IV in Bufumbira North, a VIP toilet at Shaza Playground, a 20-stall structure at Rusiza Market, and the partial construction of a chain-link fence with two access gates in Kisoro Municipality.
In addition to infrastructure development, the UPDF donated medical equipment and supplies to selected health facilities in the district. The donated items include a theatre table, hospital beds, delivery beds, and mattresses.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held at the Mayor’s Garden in Kisoro Municipality, the UPDF Division Commander, Major General Paul Muhanguzi, said the projects were part of the army’s commitment to giving back to communities while commemorating peace across the country. He emphasized that development and security are closely linked.
The Chief Guest, the Minister of State for Animal Industry, Hon. Lt. Col (Rtd) Bright Rwamirama, commended the UPDF for its continued role in supporting community development initiatives.
Kisoro District LCV Chairperson Abel Bizimana also praised the UPDF, noting that this year’s Tarehe Sita celebrations have resulted in impactful projects that will significantly benefit residents of Kisoro District.
Tarehe Sita, also known as the Tarehe Sita celebrations, commemorates the founding of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF). The 45th anniversary celebrations were launched in December 2025, with activities leading up to a climax in Kisoro on February 6th, 2026. The theme for this year’s event is “Defending the Gains of the Revolution and Honouring the Sacrifice of Freedom Fighters.”
