Kisoro potato production industries limited (KPPIL), has been described as a key accelerator of Irish potato production in Kisoro district once its operations revive.
Speaking to media after a two days workshop with production and business experts at Virunga hotel, the Netherlands development organization (SNV) representative Allan Wailer said that Tycoon Mugenga’s Irish potato factory located in Kisoro district will promote market for Irish farmers thereby boosting their morale to produce which will also increase individual incomes.
He noted that Netherlands development organization is trying to involve all necessary production stake holders to ensure that there is quality production by farmers .
The director of research at Kacwekano agricultural institute, Alex Barekye advised farmers to avoid over cultivating the land, poor seed selection and ignoring soil testing if Irish production in Kisoro is to revive again.
The Kisoro Irish Potato growers’ chairman, Kamali Fidel said that Irish farmers will have to join hands and avail the information acquired from the workshop to other farmers in order to increase production.
He also said that farmers’ commitment to adhere to the instructions given by experts will increase production.
Muhozi Stevene a farmer from Nyundo Sub County applauded the workshop because of learned new ideas. He also noted that the irish farmers he heads in Nyundo sub county are eagerly waiting to start supplying quality irish potatoes when processing begins.
