Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Elly Maate identified the deceased people as Mukanoheri Anastansia, 44, a resident of Kabaya village, Nyarubuye Sub County in Kisoro district, who was a passenger on the ill-fated motorcycle.

Also dead is Ntakirutimana Priscilla, a 50-year-old resident of Kabaya village in Mupaka Town Council, also a passenger on motorcycle.

Other victims of the accident are Ntagisanayo Odira, a female juvenile aged 17 years from Rurangara village in Mupaka town council, who was walking on the road.

The motorcycle rider, identified as Vincent of Kabaya village in Mupaka Town Council, escaped and was still at large, by publication time.

“It’s alleged that the motorcycle was carrying two female passengers from the burial in Busigi village, heading to Nyarubuye side at a high speed and without lights. On reaching Rurangara village in Mupaka town council, it met a female pedestrian who was also crossing the road and knocked her right leg. The rider lost control and fell down with the two female passengers killing them on spot,” Maate told www.vomuhabura.com.

The scene was visited by ASP Kushaba Michael, the District Traffic Officer Kisoro and his team, Maate adds. The sketch map was drawn, bodies were taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem and the motorcycle was recovered and retrieved from the scene, parked at Kisoro CPS pending IOV inspection.

Maate blamed the accident on speeding and riding a motorcycle without head lights.

According to the 2024 annual crime report, 5,144 people died in road accident. Of these, 1,720 were motorcyclists, while 676 were passengers on motorcycles.
