Police in Kisoro district has failed to recover the remaining body parts of a baby who was allegedly murdered by cutting and later buried in a garden by its own mother.
Kigezi region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate says two suspects including 20-year-old Allen Nyirabyiringiro and Loy Nyirabyiringiro aged 41, both residents of Rurangara Cell, Bugara Ward, Mupaka town Council have been arrested on charges of alleged infanticide.
It is alleged that on the 23rd of January 2023, a minor by the names of Owimana Pius aged 12 while digging in the garden discovered a half body part of a child.
With the assistance of Rurangara LC I Chairperson Niyonegamiye John Bosco, Allen Nyirabyiringiro (mother to the deceased child) and Loy Nyirabyiringiro (mother to the lead suspect) were apprehended while digging in a garden in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Maate says the search for the missing parts of the baby’s body which include the head and stomach was unsuccessful.
The lower limbs have been taken to Kisoro Hospital for postmortem.
Local residents led by the Area LC I chairperson Niyonegamiye John Bosco have said they will not give the innocent baby a decent burial, not until all the missing body parts have been recovered.
They have also demanded that the two suspects, mother and daughter be banished from the village permanently because they are dishonest and very dangerous.
Niyonegamiye claims that the mother of the dead child has given birth before, contrary to the information given during her statement to the Police.
He further pointed out that Allen Nyirabyiringiro’s mother, Loy Nyirabyiringiro is not a good woman citing an example of her burning her neighbors’ clothes as well dumping her own husband’s clothes in the latrine.
Police says more inquiries into the case are still ongoing.
