Security agencies in Kisoro District have arrested 28 suspects during an intelligence-led operation targeting illegal mining activities at Kirwa Wolfram mining site.
The operation, conducted on May 2, 2026, followed persistent reports from local authorities about unknown individuals—suspected to be Rwandan nationals—illegally extracting wolfram from the government-controlled site.
The mine, which contains wolfram and tin deposits, is located in Kabaya Village, Busengo Parish, Nyarubuye Sub-county, and is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development under the Mineral Police Protection Unit.
According to police, 25 of the 28 suspects arrested are Rwandan nationals who allegedly entered Uganda through porous border points without valid documentation.
During the operation, authorities recovered approximately 30 kilograms of suspected wolfram from the suspects.
Police say illegal mining activities at the site have been ongoing since the beginning of 2026, prompting increased surveillance and eventual intervention.
All suspects have been charged with illegal mining and unlawful entry and stay in Uganda without valid permits. They remain in custody as investigations continue.
Kigezi region police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that upon completion of inquiries, the suspects will be arraigned before court to answer the charges.
The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources and warned against illegal cross-border activities.
