People from Kigezi region seeking to get married have been cautioned against wedding marriage partners from within the same clan in an attempt of curbing health related complications among new born children.
The comments were made by the Chairperson of the Basigi, Basindi and Banyaruko Clans Geoffrey Mfitumukiza during an annual meeting held at Ineza Children’s Center in Kisoro Municipality.
The Basigi, Basindi and Banyaruko Clans consist of more than 7000 clan members spread across the entire Kigezi region.
Mr. Mfitumukiza says, the young generation face a unique challenge of not making enough inquires about their potential marriage mates and this often leads to challenges in their marriage life.
A well- known saying among the Bafumbira says, “Inshakira Miruho, Ntibaza Amoko”; which means, asking questions and doing your research before marrying will often save you embarrassment and heart ache.
Several participants in yesterday’s meeting agreed that many young couples are getting married without first consulting and this has led to children being born with weak immune systems while others have low mental ability, as a result of marrying so close to their family line.
Dr. Benon Karekezi Rukunda, who represented the guest of honor, Eng. Canon. Ivan Batuma says it is vital that clan members maintain a habit of networking and sharing ideas.
This will promote cooperation and help avert mistakes among the younger generation that are not well informed due to the nature of their demanding jobs requiring them to live so far away from home.
Dr. Rukunda said, the clans intend to set up a savings and cooperative scheme to save money for further engagements and projects as well as tree planting in order to keep Kigezi, an evergreen region.
