Fèdèration Rwandaisè de Football Association has announced that the country will not feature in this year’s edition of the CECAFA Challenge cup in Bahir-Dar, Ethiopia due to COVID-19.

It is this deadly variant which prompted the government to impose a partial lockdown on contact and sports activities.

“Reference is also made to the Covid-19 preventive measures drawn by the government of Rwanda imposing partial lockdown on most activities including contact and team sports,” read part of the statement.

“Rwanda U23 national football team will not participate in the CECAFA U23 due to be held in Bahir-Dar, Ethiopia from 17July-July 31st 2021,” it confirmed.

It now leaves nine countries left to feature including Ethiopia (hosts), Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan, Djibouti, Uganda, Zanzibar and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Uganda are not only the defending champions but also the record holders with a whooping 15 cups.

Unlike the previous editions where the senior national teams participated, this particular one will have the U-23 teams representing their respective countries.
