Rukungiri’s Kashenyi secondary school is the champion of the Kigezi regional secondary school games under the Uganda Secondary school sports association (USSSA) that have been hosted by St Gertrude girls secondary school in Kisoro district.
The tournament that began peacefully on Saturday 15th April with 19 schools slotted in six groups had only eight qualifying to quarter finals as required. These were Kisoro Vison Secondary school, Muhabura Shine secondary school (Kisoro district), St. Aloysius Kitanga ss (Rukiga district), Bishop Comboni college, Kambuga (Kanungu district), Kashenyi secondary school(Rukungiri), St. Gerald’s secondary school (Rukungiri) and Kyabugashe High school, Bugangari (Rukungiri district)
These also continued peacefully on Sunday, the 16th day of April 2023 where Bishop Comboni secondary school eliminated defending champions Kihihi high school by a goal to nil.
In other results, Muhabura shine was beaten on penalties (3:4) by Kashenyi secondary school after a nil whole draw, St Aloysius Kitanga won Kyabugashe secondary school by a goal to zero while Kisoro Vision secondary school was eliminated by St Gerald’s secondary school on two goals to zero, in what was a boring quarter final tie.
In semi finals, The Entertaining Bishop Comboni secondary school encounter with St. Aloysius Kitanga ended in favour of St Aloysius with a one nil win while Kashenyi secondary school won against St Gerald’s secondary school with the same score in the Rukungiri district derby.
However, Kashenyi secondary school was later announced as the regional champions after discovering that other two semi finalists Bishop comboni and St Aloysius had used ineligible players.
According to the law, Kashenyi became the only finalist and eventually won the regional trophy that was presented to them by the Kisoro district Education officer, Mwunvaneza Emmanuel who was the guest of hour for the function.
He asked head teachers to avoid making risks by using ineligible players because there are many consequences involved. He also encouraged the girl child to love the sporting activity as for both health and financial benefits.
The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) urged School administrators and games teachers to always adhere to sports rules and guidelines during tournaments to avoid embarrassments.
Among the representatives is the chairman for sports in Kigezi sub region under USSSA, Rukundo Onesmus who passed out this message at Kisoro technical Institute Playground in Nyakabande Sub County, where finals were to be played.
According to Onesmus, sports teachers should always read and understand the rules and guidelines sent to them to save their employers from making losses. He also noted that such acts demoralises other able footballers and hence kills their talents.
He announced that the USSSA Kigezi regional committee will sit and discuss how to handle the two schools that fielded ineligible players.
Onesmus revealed that St Aloysius Kitanga fielded a non-student and a player of Maroons women football club while Bishop Comboni College Kambuga fielded an over aged player and evidence was produced by petitioners.
He said that Kigezi only has one slot at the national level in the USSA Competitions but urged St. Gerald’s secondary school to be on alert because the committee is lobbying for another spot.
The USSA delegate to FUFA on behalf of Kigezi sub region who doubles as the Head teacher for Bishop Comboni College, Brother John Bosco Kato Urged Kashenyi secondary school to learn from his school’s mistake and ensure not to take illegal players to nationals on 6th May this year.
The Western region USSSA representative, Kabweggyere Dauglas cautioned administrators from Involving in substandard actions in search of cheap popularity. He noted that such actions instead make the schools lose their integrity.
Dauglas also commended all participants in the tournament and urged Kashenyi secondary school to ably represent Kigezi region.
Meanwhile, Girls from Kyabugashe secondary school were left crying as they were not happy after getting the news they were eliminated by St. Aloysius, a team that used an ineligible player in the quarter finals.
