Residents of Muramba and Nyarusiza sub-counties in Kisoro District who live along the Kisoro – Mgahinga Tourism Road that had not received their compensation at set to be paid this week, according to Bufumbira south Member of Parliament Alex Niyonsaba ‘Seruganda’.
Hon. Niyonsaba’s message was delivered by his political assistant who also doubles as the LCV Councilor for Muramba Sub County, Martin Hakizimana.
Hakizimana says 1000 households in Nyarusiza and Muramba sub-counties have already received their money however a few households are still demanding hefty sums from Government.
The Government of Uganda secured 20 billion shillings meant for compensating more than 1000 people who are likely to get affected during the tarmacking of Kisoro – Mgahinga road.
The 14km stretch that passes through Rusiza and heads into the heart of Nyarusiza Sub County leads to popular tourist destination, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the smallest national Park in Uganda.
It is famous for being home to the endangered Mountain Gorilla and the Golden Monkey among other animals.
According to Hakizimana Martin, people will start getting their compensation money this week on their bank accounts.
The payments will be phased, and people will not receive their money at the same time.
Hakizimana praised the area MP for his efforts in securing compensation as quickly as possible.
He further cautioned households that will benefit from the money to desist from alcoholism and fighting but instead use the money for development.
