Police in Kisoro has called on all religious institutions in the district to invest in owning a handheld metal detector that can be used in early detection of wrong elements.
The call was made yesterday while Police met with different church leaders at Mubano Hotel in Kisoro Municipality.
Head of investigations in the district, OC CID Godliver Twinomugisha said Police has the capacity to purchase the security items for those interested in securing their congregations from any external negative elements.
According to Godliver, the Police force in the district is not enough to cover all churches, monitor the security threats from across the border with Democratic Republic of Congo as well as maintain top vigilance in the wake of countrywide terrorism.
Godliver said 200,000 Ugandan shillings can get interested parties a good handheld metal detector.
Kisoro Police Community Liaison Officer Arinaitwe Boaz said it is possible for all places of worship to set aside offertories for just one Sunday in order to raise the money for a handheld metal detector.
Several church leaders said it is a good idea to beef up security in worship centers because many visitors from outside Kisoro will be expected.
They also said it is important to understand how church personnel will be trained within days to Christmas on how to operate such gadgets and also how to respond to dangerous situation.
