Elizabeth Rwamwenge, the Principal of Kisoro Primary Teacher’s College in Kisoro Municipality has been hailed for inspiring academic excellence during her four-year tenure at the institution.
Rwamwenge retired on 8th November 2023 after reaching the mandatory age of 60 years.
During her time as Principal at Kisoro PTC between 2019 and 2023, the institution was recognized as the 3rd best institute Countrywide in the Grade III Certificate Exams in 2019.
In 2020, Kisoro PTC managed to come in 2nd position in the National Exams, an extraordinary achievement in the history of the institute.
Rwamwenge made the revelations yesterday during the official handover ceremony held at Kisoro PTC grounds.
Kambabazi Florence, a former tutor at the institute was selected to take over as the official Acting Caretaker Principal of the institute which is in the process of being re-purposed to serve as a training school for medical students.
On April 1st 2019, the Government of Uganda through Cabinet approved the National teacher Policy to provide a framework to guide the professionalization of the teaching profession and streamline the interventions aimed at standardization of teacher related issues.
Kisoro PTC is one of the colleges that was re-purposed to serve as a medical training institute and will be funded by Government.
Rwamwenge says at the time of taking over the institute from Principal Rev. Fr. James Nuwagaba in 2019, she was handed a debt of 150 Million shillings however she managed to pay more than half of it, leaving behind a debt of 14 Million shillings.
She also noted that all the school land of approximately 14 hectares was surveyed, and land titles were processed and are now in the safe custody the board of Governors of the Institute.
The chairperson Board of Governor Rev. Canon Baker Habimana commended Rwamwenge for her excellent service to Kisoro and wished her a good retirement.
Canon Baker further expelled false rumors that the school sold some land to a private businessperson to construct a tourist hotel.
Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education and Sports Ojama Christopher said he is aware that Principal Rwamwenge has not been paid since July of this year but commended her for persevere with her duties until the end of her service.
According to Ojama, the Ministry of Education is engaging the Ministry of Health to expedite the process of re-purposing Kisoro PTC into a health training Institute.
Kisoro Municipal Town Clerk Alikwan Kisubi said the Municipal authority is prepared to offer any support to the ministry of education to ensure a health training facility is started in Kisoro Municipality.
Kwiringira Valence, the Representative of staff at Kisoro PTC said most of the staff at the school were absorbed by some Core PTCs like Bukinda however many are still not on Government Payroll.
Kambabazi Florence called upon the Municipal and District Leadership to support her financially in order to maintain the school grounds.
Kisoro RDC Hajji Badru Ssebayala said the institute has a lot of assets that require protection from wrong elements. He pledged to work closely with the Police and the UPDF to ensure that land grabbers do not encroach on the school land.
About Kisoro PTC
Kisoro Primary Teacher’s College is a government founded College. It is located on land, which was provided by the community, one Kilometer along old Kisoro- Kyanika road.
Hon. Mateke Philemon, who was the Minister of State for Education assisted in the acquisition of the land.
In 2003, the Ministry of Education and Sports purchased additional land for the college, approximately 13 hectares, where two staff houses and eucalyptus forest, a demonstration Primary School (1988) can be found.
The College was founded on 2nd July 1982 at the merger of two study centers, one in Rubanda headed by David Murasanyi and the other at Seseme headed by Munyangabo S.W David.
