The police in Kisoro district are hunting for suspects who allegedly assaulted a 64-year-old man, leading to his death.
The deceased is Stephen Bigirimana, a resident of Chibumba village, Rwingwe parish, Nyakabande Sub County in Kisoro district.
Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Elly Maate, told www.vomuhabura.com that the deceased met his fate on Monday, 7th October, 2024, at around 9:00am.
Preliminary information indicates that the deceased was on his way to the garden carrying bean stakes for supporting growing beans when he met three people that assaulted him.
“He was carrying stakes for supporting growing beans when he met one Henry Nzitubundi and his two sons who included one Kagabo and another whom he (the deceased) did not know the name,” said Maate.
Before his death, Bigirimana is said to have told his relatives that Nzitubundi told his sons to assault him in revenge, saying he had also assaulted him recently.
“Henry told his sons that at one time of recent, the deceased assaulted him and they had an ongoing case of assault in Kisoro court,” Maate explained.
It is said that one of the sons identified as Kagabo hit the deceased on his right ankle, before he fell down, and the three started assaulting him.
He made an alarm, but the suspects ran away.
The deceased then called his friend identified as Kamari, who helped him to inform the police about what had happened and also sent him to tell his sons to take him to the police.
Maate says that upon arrival at Mutolere police post, he was advised to first seek medical care, since he was over bleeding.
Unfortunately, he breathed his last the following day on Tuesday 8th October.
The scene of crime was visited and documented, statements recorded from relevant witnesses and the body was taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem as inquiries continue, according to police.
