A section of residents in Kisoro Municipality yesterday deployed huge boulders into a section of Kisoro – Mgahinga road near Rusiza market which had become submerged with water for several days.
Road users in the area have been navigating around the huge puddle of water, confused as to whether municipal authorities are blind to its existence.
Kisoro- Mgahinga road is one of the major UNRA roads in the district that was ear marked for rehabilitation more than 10 years ago.
The road leads to Mount Mgahinga National Park, home of the golden monkey, Mountain Gorilla and several other animal and plant species.
The large mass of water, which went viral on Kisoro media platforms deservedly earned the name “Lake Rusiza“, in hopes that someone with an ounce of authority might respond to the matter, but no one came, no responded to call for help.
In broad day light, residents picked the biggest boulders, rocks and stones they could find and dropped them into the road.
This caused a stir, especially for tour operators and truck drivers carrying merchandise who were forced to turn around and find an alternative route.
Check Mate to UNRA
Sources say a UNRA engineer whose identity was not readily established was forced to respond to the situation created by the fed up locals.
Within hours of identifying the problem, the said UNRA official remained by the damaged part of the road and monitored as his team filled the water with gravel and raised it significantly.
Social media comments were abuzz with comments with people suggesting that if people forcefully put authorities at gun point, then maybe service delivery might be realized.
Kisoro Municipality residents are currently grappling with piling garbage after a three month trial run of contracting a company to collect garbage weekly abruptly came to an end after technocrats suggested that residents pay some money for garbage collection.
Kisoro Municipality Politicians vehemently protested against the proposal saying, the residents shouldn’t have to pay any money, a move that forced the technocrats to fold their hands.
