The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) Spokesperson Vianney Mpungu Luggya has said the on-going rehabilitation works at the Kisoro Aerodrome, Nyakabande Sub County, Kisoro District are expected to be completed in 90 days.
Luggya identified the contractor as Tetra Technical Services which took possession of the site at Nyakabande on November 30th of 2023 with the objective of working on the runway and associated taxiways.
Back in November 2023, Aero Link management raised concerns about the poor state of the airfield that was riddled with potholes.
In a letter written to UCCA, Aero Link pointed out that the runway had loose stones and a dangerous concrete slab which crisscrosses the runway.
Luggya apologized for the inconveniences caused by the rehabilitation works at Nyakabande Airfield.
Air Chartered Companies including Aero link Uganda and Bar Aviation have had to temporarily abandon their daily schedule to Kisoro, a popular tourist destination including but not limited to Mountain Gorilla Tracking at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
According to Luggya, a pre-feasibility Study was conducted to determine the practicability of expanding the Kisoro Aerodrome into an international Airport.
He explained that plans to carry out a full feasibility study are underway however it will all depend on the availability of resources.
Aero Link Country Manager Catherine Mugo said it is encouraging to know that rehabilitation works are taking place at the Kisoro Aerodrome.
Mugo says clients flying from Entebbe to Kisoro have to bear with the planned diversion to Mbarara or Kihihi then travel the rest of the way by road because of the on-going rehabilitation works at Kisoro Airfield.
Mugo intimated to www.vomuhabura.com that UCAA would have the Kisoro Aerodrome fully operational by January 26th, 2024.
