The territorial Police in Kisoro district are investigating circumstances under which a 5-year-old Provia Niyonshuti died.
The deceased was a pupil and resident of Bugara village, Gasiza Parish Nyakabande Sub County in Kisoro district.
It’s alleged that on Thursday, 29/05/2024 at around 3pm, the deceased went with her mother to pay a visit to her grandmother at Kibaya cell, and that’s when she went to the neighbour’s home a one Sebazungu and never returned.
According to a statement released by Kigezi regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, the relatives traced for her and she was not found.
Relatives thereafter mobilized residents and continued the search for the victim in vain.
Maate says that it is on Friday, May 30, 2024 when they decided to make a formal report to Kisoro Central Police Station and a case of disappearance was registered.
It was on Saturday morning when local residents went back for the search and recovered the body in a sack (Kadeyi) dumped in a garden about 15 meters away from the home of Sebazungu.
The residents reverted to police to report the incident.
A team of officers from Kisoro Central Police Station visited the crime scene for documentation.
Maate says statements have been obtained from relevant witnesses and postmortem was done at Kisoro Hospital.
Three suspects have been arrested, including one Damiano Kabahoze, a teacher, who at one time threatened the deceased’s father over land.
Police says that another suspect, Sebazungu, is on run, and the hunt and inquiries to establish the motive of the murder take shape.
