Care International has supported host communities in Kisoro district with an assortment of Core Relief Items aimed at improving hygiene and Sanitation.
The areas of Bunagana Town Council, Rukundo Town Council, Muramba, Nyarubuye and Nyarusiza Sub Counties are hosting fleeing Asylum seekers from Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo following fighting between M23 rebel group and Congolese Government Forces.
District leaders raised concern of a likely outbreak of diseases among the communities because of the overwhelming number of Congolese living on people’s verandahs.
Care International Gender Coordinator Teddy Akello says the Core Relief Support targeting the host communities will focus mostly on female learners who were forcefully displaced from their homes because of Political instability.
Care international has today donated assortments including sanitary pads, sanitizer, soap and Jik to Kisoro district local government to restore hygiene among communities at the border with the democratic republic of Congo.
The items include 48 boxes of bar soap, 39 boxes of sanitary pads, 6 jerry cans of sanitizer and 10 boxes of Jik Stain removal.
Robert Tukamuhebwa, the Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner says the situation at the Border with Uganda and Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo at Bunagana is still very volatile which has left many Congolese stranded in communities in Kisoro.
He noted that support from organizations like CARE International ensure that human dignity of the Asylum seekers is guaranteed.
Kisoro District LCV chairperson Abel Bizimana commended CARE International for going beyond their support at the Nyakabande Transit Camp but also remembering that host communities are also struggle with the influx of Congolese Asylum Seekers.
Bizimana further urged humanitarian agencies to do carry out further assessment in the communities to establish how serious the need is in order for Government to do more in supporting host communities in Kisoro district.
