Health ministry investigates death of woman with Covid-19 related symptoms

The ministry of health has begun investigations surrounding the death of a suspected COVID-19 female patient who passed away yesterday at a clinic in Mbale.

According to the health ministry, the deceased was a Kenyan national married to a Ugandan. On admission to the hospital, the deceased presented with COVID-19 related symptoms. She had a headache, fever and also had difficulty in breathing.

The Mbale COVID-19 taskforce leader, Edward Nyogensa says that the deceased is believed to have fallen sick a week ago and was admitted to Joyce Hospice located in Namisindwa where she has been working as a cleaner.

Ministry of Health spokesperson, Emmanuel Ainebyoona says that samples have been picked from the deceased and taken for testing.

“Samples have been obtained from the body and are currently being tested at Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe. The ministry has also dispatched expert teams to go to Mbale and carry out further investigations,” said Ainebyoona.

According to the health ministry, teams are already carrying out contact tracing as tests are being carried out to stop further spread of the disease incase the deceased passed away from COVID-19.

The health facility has been cordoned off as further investigations into the cause of death of the deceased are ongoing.

Uganda has not yet recorded any COVID-19 deaths despite increase in the number of cases reported. According to results released by the health ministry today, Uganda has 1,075 confirmed cases of the disease, with 985 recoveries.
