The Nyarusiza Sub County LCV councilor John Mfitumukiza has begged for leniency among Savings and Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) as well as commercial banks in the district after Onion farmers yesterday lost their crops to hailstorm.
The residents of Rukongi Parish Nyarusiza Sub County are counting losses after heavy rain with hail storms destroyed onions in the nursery bed.
Mfitumukiza Johns, says many farmers get loans from SACCOs and banks to finance the entire process of procuring seedlings to planting and harvesting.
Onion business in Kisoro is lucrative, coming second only to Irish potatoes. Farmers tend to invest heavily with hopes that they will break even after making sales.
Mfitumukiza says, he intends to raise the issue today in the district council session.
He further urged affected farmers to report the losses immediately to their financial lenders to avoid embarrassment and harsh treatment.
