Residents of Kisoro Municipality, Kisoro district are in Shock following the death of a 24 year old businessman who was gunned down today, in broad day light while working at his hardware shop.
The deceased, who has been identified as Patel Kuntaj, of Indian descent was a Salesman at TULJE enterprises, located along Main Street in Kisoro Municipality.
The lead suspect, Gumizamo Elioda, aged 21 is a Police Constable attached to the Filed Force Unit (FFU) Nyakabande Transit Camp.
Drama broke out during the afternoon hours when gun shots were fired.
Eye witnesses say, the off duty Police officer hid his firearm in a sack and walked into the busy hardware.
The copper, then opened fire, aiming at Patel before running out into the streets, hoping to elude capture.
Kisoro District Police Commander Robert Musisi commended the public, especially boda boda riders who managed to arrest the suspect along with his firearm in Mu-line, a slum in Kisoro Municipality.
By the time, he was arrested, Gumizamo had been disarmed and thoroughly beaten.
Meanwhile, good Samaritans from the hardware, had put the injured Patel on a motorcycle and rushed him to St. Francis Hospital, Mutolere.
Patel is believed to have died from injuries sustained from the shooting at around 8pm.
Musisi told the media that he was shocked that a Police Officer could be used in acts of crime.
According to the suspect, who is now in Police Custody, the hit on Patel was going to earn him a payout of 20 million Ugandan shillings.
By Press time, it was not clear who had hired the Police officer or why they had targeted one of the biggest and most entrepreneurial Indian- Ugandan family in Kisoro.
The latest attack on innocent civilians comes at a time, when crime in Kisoro is on a high rate.
School going youth, especially in higher learning institutions have been waylaying people for money and phones, using pangas, clubs and other sharp objects.
The district is also receiving an influx of Congolese asylum seekers who are fleeing Political instability in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafiq Sekandi says Police intends to increase its patrols and operations to ensure lives and property is secured.
