The Government of Uganda has withdrawn its trust in DOTT Services Company that had previously been contracted to tarmac the over 72KM Muko-Rubuguri, Kisoro-Rubuguri and Rubuguri-Nkuringo tourism roads.
DOTT services agreed to the responsibility of tarmacking the tourism roads back in 2019 on a pre-financing arrangement however nothing has been done to date.
While on the floor of Parliament, State Minister for Works and Transport Hon. Ecweru Musa the company has been found to be unable to do the job, adding that they had bitten off too much than what they could afford to swallow.
Hon. Ecweru said that Government could not support the idea of having communities open a road between Nteko and Buhoma because it would set a wrong precedent that Government cannot manage to do its own projects.
The 10 – 13 Km security road passes right though Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is known to be used by locals however no motorcycles or vehicles are allowed along the road.
In his submission, while before the 11th Parliament, Hon. Kwizera said the state of roads in Bukimbiri is so poor and yet all dignitaries, local and foreign visit Bukimbiri because of the presence of the endangered Mountain Gorillas, that can be found nowhere but in Kisoro District.
He said hotels in the area charge up to 1000 US dollars a night (3.8 Million Shillings) and yet the roads do not reflect the amount of money collected in foreign exchange and revenue.
Head of Government Business, Prime Minister, Hon Robinah Nabbanja said tourism roads in Kisoro remain a top priority adding that Government is looking for the finances to kick start the process.
She said plans to increase internet connectivity to various tourism sites in Bukimbiri are also underway.
