Water projects, valued at over 286 Million Ugandan Shillings have been commissioned and handed over to communities in Kisoro district.
Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafiq Sekandi said the newly commissioned projects are in line with Government’s commitment of fulfilling President Yoweri Museveni’s 2021- 2026 Manifesto.
Muyove Gravity Water Flow Scheme in Nkuringo Town Council (204 Million Shillings), the newly rehabilitated Gatare Water Gravity Flow Scheme in Kirwa village, Nyarubuye Sub County (57 Million Shillings) and Busanza Secondary School Irrigation Demonstration Scheme in Busanza Sub County (25 million shillings) were officially handed over to the communities.
Kisoro District Water Engineer Cranmer Mberwa said of Muyove Gravity Water Flow Scheme, with a total of 32 tap stands has been supported with a 30,000 liter tank at Mwumba Primary School in Mugombwa village, Nkuringo Town Council.
Under the UgiFT project, Gatare Gravity Water Scheme, with a total of 11 tap stands has been beefed up with a 40,000 litres capacity reservoir tank located in Kirwa village.
Mberwa explained that it will have the capacity to supply seven villages including; Kibande, Kinyababa, Gatete, Gapfurizo among others.
Water challenges in Kisoro pose a serious threat to development as communities are forced to move long distances in search of clean safe water.
Hajji Badru Mayanja, the Kisoro Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) said Government efforts need to be recognized and appreciated because connection water in hilly and hard to reach areas is not an easy task.
Mayanja urged communities to protect their own water source for sustainability and ensure that the water remains uncontaminated for the betterment of the communities that use the water.
The Nkuringo town council LCV Councilor, Bahinyuza Festus said the NRM Government has been instrumental in bringing development in the region.
Bahinyuza admits joining Politics to lobby for such development in his area.
“Being a member of the Works and Technical committee of the district has really yield fruits and I commend the Government for keeping its word to the people of Kisoro, Bahinyuza said.
Other Sites Visited
Kisoro RDC Hajji Shafiq Sekandi also paid a courtesy call to Nyarubuye HC III which was hit by landslides earlier this year.
The devastating landslide destroyed some infrastructure and cut off access to water.
Sekandi called for quick restoration of water at the health facility.
The team also visited Mwumba Progressive Seed Secondary School in Nkuringo Town Council that is being constructed by Contractor GESES Company.
Sekandi commended the work being done at the school and urged communities to be mindful of Government infrastructure by monitoring to prevent vandalism which causes financial loss to Government and to the people of Kisoro.
