A section of leaders in Kisoro Municipality have launched a series of activities at the Municipal headquarters , including planting bamboo trees in a bid to conserve the environment.

A low- key event on the 18th of September, 2022 saw the new Kisoro Municipal town Clerk Haruna Kamba along with a few other technocrats from the Municipal divisions and a representative from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) plant bamboo trees in different parts of the municipality.

According to Kamba, Kisoro Municipality has the potential to regain its status of being one of the cleanest towns in the country.

KMC Town Clerk Haruna Kamba

Kisoro Municipality was once recognized as the seventh cleanest town in Uganda.

“This can only be achieved through a deliberate effort by shop and hotel owners within the central business area maintaining a strict routine of keeping their premises clean”, Kamba explained

Kamba’s strategy could not be more far from the truth as residents continue to decry the unsanitary conditions of the town which is heavily littered with Plastic and bio-degradable waste.

The situation is often worsened on Market days, Monday and Thursday when traders from different corners of the district visit the town to trade.

Sugarcane peelings litter the streets all the way from Rusiza market down to the old market.

Open urination and defecation of human and animals is a common phenomenon on such days.

A policy of garbage collection that was introduced by Kamba’s predecessor Sharifa Nakintu, was quickly abandoned after residents refused to pay a garbage collection fee to the Municipal authorities.

Gatimba market remains a major concern for Municipal authorities.

Kamba says, if the community learns to work together, Kisoro Municipality has the potential to become a bustling tourism town, attracting visitors and businesses from neighboring Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
