Independent presidential candidate Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde has been denied campaigning in Kisoro district today.
According to the Kisoro RDC Capt Peter Mugisha, Lt Gen Tumukunde was turned away because he was not scheduled to campaign in Kisoro today, basing on the campaign schedule released by the Electoral Commission.
Tumukunde was yesterday campaigning in Kanungu district where he received a warm welcome, after facing chaotic scenes in Rukungiri, his home district, where he and his supporters were showered with teargas.
According to the RDC, Tumukunde was expected to be in Kisoro yesterday, but he didn’t show up.
He was stopped a few minutes to midday at Kanaba security checkpoint and asked to go back. Despite pleading with security, Tumukunde was not allowed and is expected to campaign in Rubanda district.
According to Mugisha, Tumukunde was supposed to have campaigned in Kisoro on Tuesday and that security personnel had prepared to receive him.
A heated exchange between Tumukunde and Patrick Byaruhanga, the Kisoro District Police Commander ensued with Tumukunde arguing that the terrain of the area was difficult to navigate and could not stick to the campaign program.
Mugisha says that Tumukunde will be allowed to campaign in the area when he is cleared by the Electoral Commission.
Tumukunde later abandoned his trip to Kisoro and proceeded to Rubanda town council for campaigns.
