Fuel shortages have hit Kisoro District, triggering long queues at Kyamps service stations as prices continue to soar.
By 5:00pm on Thursday 23rd April 23, 2026, Champs petrol station was the only petrol station in the municipality with petrol while others like stabex, Total, Shell are out of petrol.
At Kyamps Service Station, motorists and boda boda riders are lining up for extended periods, with some waiting between 15 to 30 minutes to fuel their motorcycles. Petrol at the station is now retailing at shs7, 500 per liter, while diesel is selling at shs5,680.
The situation has been worsened by disorder at the pumps, where some individuals are reportedly using bottles and jerrycans to bypass queues, frustrating other customers.
Across the district, the crisis appears to be deepening. Petrol stations in trading centres outside Kisoro town are selling fuel at as high as shs9, 000 per liter. Meanwhile, Kindly Service Station has run out of petrol, although diesel remains available. Major dealers such as Total,Stabex and Shell service stations are also reported to be out of petrol entirely.
Residents and transport operators say the persistent shortages and rising costs are disrupting daily activities, and are calling for urgent government intervention to stabilize supply and prices.
Boda boda riders say the rising fuel costs are making it difficult to sustain their work. They note that many customers are unwilling or unable to pay increased fares, which may force riders to park their motorcycles.
Batamukoraho Baker, the Secretary General of Kisoro United Boda Boda Association, has urged riders to remain patient during the crisis. He acknowledged that their work will be affected but advised them to adjust fares depending on the distance covered.
Baker also warned that many riders may be forced to temporarily stop operations until fuel prices stabilize.
Tahigwa Reagan, the manager of Champs Petrol Station, said the fuel shortage is nationwide and has affected everyone. He revealed that the station may also run out of petrol by Friday 24th April 23, 2026 due to the high number of customers.
Tahigwa, however, expressed hope that new fuel supplies are expected by the end of the month, which could help ease the shortage.
