Police in Kisoro District have launched investigations into the brutal murder of a 70-year-old man whose body was discovered in Nyakagezi Trading Centre, Murora Sub-county.

The body of the deceased was found on Monday 5th by people who were heading to their workplaces.

The deceased has been identified as Benon Nsekerabanzi, a resident of Bukerahe Village in Karago Parish, Bufumbira East Constituency. His body was found lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts on the head and face. Blood stains were also observed in different parts of the trading center.

Police recovered some exhibits from the scene which included an iron bar and a stick, both suspected to have been used in the murder and stained with blood. Police also recovered removed teeth believed to belong to the deceased, as well as buttons from the coat he was wearing.

Samvura Obed, the deceased’s son, said he received the shocking news of his father’s death on Monday 5th morning. He explained that he had last seen his father at home before learning that he had gone to take a drink at Nyakagezi Trading Centre, where he is believed to have been murdered.

Safari Nikodemu a resident of Nyakagezi, attributed the rising insecurity in the area to idle youth allegedly involved in drug abuse, including marijuana and cigarettes. He said such behavior is contributing to increased crime in the community.

The area Local Council I Chairperson, Eriya Habumugisha, who also operates a business in Nyakagezi Trading Centre, said residents woke up to find the deceased lying in a pool of blood. He added that the area is increasingly being targeted by suspected thugs, some of whom are believed to cross from neighboring Rwanda.

Meanwhile, the Local Council III Chairperson, Peace Munezero, has appealed to police to strengthen security in the area, citing rising cases of violence. She noted that in the past two years, Nsekerabanzi is the fourth person to be murdered in the trading centre. Previous victims include Sedurack Nkurikiyimana, Charles Musahuzi, and Foyibi Nyirambonigaba, all residents of the same area.

Police visited the scene and transported the body to Kisoro Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Three suspects have since been arrested to assist with investigations.

This incident comes few days after another murder in the district, where Samvura Richard, a taxi driver and resident of Sagitwe Village in Mabungo Parish, Nyarusiza Sub-county, was found dead at Nturo trading center. His body had been dumped in stagnant water at Nturo Trading Centre. Ten suspects were arrested in connection with that case, and the deceased was laid to rest yesterday.
