A team of Community Development Officers (CDOs) from Lwengo District Local Government have showered praise on the leadership of Kisoro district after observing significant development across all sectors.
The team of CDOs that was led by the Secretary for Gender in Lwengo, Isa Bukenya visited Kisoro district on a benchmarking exercise that lasted three days.
During their visit to Kisoro, the CDOs were given an opportunity to interact with some of the best performing Youth groups in Kisoro including Busamba Community Development Forum among others.
They also visited tourist sites on Lake Mutanda including the border posts of Bunagana and Cyanika.
Bukenya said the level of development in Kisoro is far beyond that in Lwengo district because people in Kisoro are focused on working their gardens and businesses.
He noted that Lwengo still has a big challenge of people spending more time engaging in Politics and unconstructive talk meant to invoke unhealthy competition, jealousy and rivalry.
Bukenya said information sharing during the three-day visit will inspire their CDOs to become innovative to face the challenges in Lwengo with a new positive outlook.
He however observed some challenges in Kisoro including more men spending time drinking alcohol and women doing all the work.
Bukenya said tourism potential hasn’t fully been tapped into and this could be the key to prosperity in the district.
“We never realized how gifted Kisoro district is until we reached and toured some of the places. It is true, the tourism potential in the area has a lot to offer but people have not yet tapped into it”, Bukenya said
Lwengo District borders Sembabule District to the north, Bukomansimbi District to the north-east, Masaka District to the east, Rakai District to the south, and Lyantonde District to the west.
According 2014 National Population and Housing Census, Lwengo District had total population of 275,450 people with growth rate of 1.07%.
Kisoro Chief Administrative Officer Hajji Badru Mayanja said Kisoro district has great potential that is limited by Political insecurity from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He noted that most workers know their duty and are committed to serving the people with a few hindrances that include religious and social class differences.
Enock Ndikumana, Principal CDO for Kisoro District said such field visits are necessary because they inspire confidence among Civil servants who have a huge responsibility of delivering quality services to the people of Uganda.
Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafiq Sekandi said the people of Kisoro are hardworking and committed to saving which is not common in district from central Uganda.
He advised the CDOs from Lwengo to sensitize the communities to save for the future and avoid spending lavishly which is a common feature among communities in Central Uganda.
