Children’s Hope Organization has been applauded for improving services at various Health Centers in Kisoro district.
This is after the NGO, ran by Ms Adrine Atuhire, donated items that include; blankets, bedsheets and pillows to Gasovu Health Centre III in Nyabwishenya Sub County, Bukimbiri Health Center III in Nyundo Sub County and Zindiro Health Centre III in Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality.
Ms Adrine, a Secondary School teacher, says items were also received at Nyabihuniko and Rutaka Health Centers.
The public health facilities received 10 blankets, 10 bedsheets and 10 pillows each.
The In charge, Gasovu Health Center III, Sasiraba Deus, appreciated Children’s Hope Organization for the generosity.
He noted that Gasovu has been operating without beddings, which caused discomfort among patients and health workers.
“We didn’t have any bedsheet at this facility. And as medical workers, we are grateful that we can now give beddings to our patients. You can’t imagine the agony we have been serving our patients with. It haunts us to see patients lie on mattresses covered with mackintosh sheets without any bedsheets.” Said Sasiraba.
Sasiraba is confident that the beddings will now encourage mothers to seek maternity services, instead of delivering at home.
Murindahabi Peter and Milka Rurina, in charges of Zindiro and Bukimbiri Health Center III respectively, say the donation will help patients from under privileged backgrounds.
“This is especially to the humble families. They come sometimes with a piece of cloth. But in the same vein, we urge all people to avoid self-medication because it is on the rise,” said Murindahabi.
For Bukimbiri Health Centre III, Rurina says most mothers have been arriving for delivery without bedsheets, which has been putting health workers on tension.
“Most of the people are underprivileged even the mothers who come to deliver, most of them don’t have bedsheets to use. So, things like that are very useful and we are ready to put them to use,” says Ms Rulina.
Nyundo Sub County Chairperson, Mutambuzi Fred Kanyaruju, however regrets that Bukimbiri Health Centre III runs on worn-out mattresses and old wooden and metallic beds.
He appealed to the District Health Department for adequate medical supplies and equipment.
According to the Children’s Hope Organization Director, Atuhire Adrine, the donations were mobilized following a tour that found that most facilities where their beneficiaries get medical care lacked the supplies.
Ms Atuhire adds that the NGO aims at empowering orphans and their caregivers, and was concerned with the status of most health centers.
“We visited several schools and Health Centres where the children we support go to. We however noticed the need for our support in form of beddings and mattresses. We have so far distributed these items to Zindiro, Rutaka, Gasovu, Bukimbiri and Nyabihuniko. We do this because we hope our beneficiaries and pregnant mothers from humble families can get improved services.” Said Atuhire Adrine.
Children’s Hope Organisation supports orphans and vulnerable children in various ways, including provision of school fees and scholastic materials.
Beneficiaries also receive income-generation projects in form of domestic animals like pigs, chicken, rabbits and cows, with their shelters, says Adrine.
Today, Children’s Hope Organisation is supporting at least 170 orphans and vulnerable children’s education in various Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions in Kisoro district.
However, Ms Adrine calls for concerted efforts to elevate the status of services at public health facilities.
