The state minister for Youth and Children Affairs, who also doubles as the Woman Member of Parliament for Kisoro District, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi has said the cost of treating infants in Kisoro is very high, with some parents being forced to sell off their properties to meet the bill.
The comments were made earlier this week during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine who had travelled to Kisoro to commission Maregamo HC III in Murora Sub County, Kisoro District.
According to Hon. Sarah Mateke, the only private children’s’ clinic in Kisoro called Potters Village is far too costly for ordinary parents.
Hon. Mateke says, the average bill at any one given time is not less than 1 million shillings which has forced parents to sell off their land and other properties.

Potter’s Village Ministries is a Child Crisis and Medical Centre in Kisoro.
They also provide a temporary home for babies whose mothers have died in childbirth, or who are mentally ill or who have been abandoned, until they can be resettled.
Potter’s Village is a project overseen by the Church of Uganda in Kisoro.
It was founded by the Rev. Canon Jenny Green, who was a youth pastor in the Diocese of Muhabura and a CMS mission partner, who had a vision to reach out to destitute children in the community.
Aidah Kyarimpa, Porters village administrator said that the medical charges vary case by case and the costs are not as high as the hon. minister claims.
Kyarimpa said the medical center is transparent in its operations and audit reports are available to all those seeking to find out more.
She further cautioned Politicians who seek to make political statements at the expense of hard-working men and women of Potters Village who live, day in and day out with sick children and worried parents who need to be restored with hope and courage.
